Rising Generic Drug Prices Spark Federal Investigation

A variety of market forces, including drug shortages, manufacturing problems, and decreased competition, have led to dramatic price increases for generic drugs that once cost pennies per pill. Escalating prices for generic drugs have garnered media scrutiny and sparked federal inquiry. Last week, the Department of Justice issued subpoenas to two generic drug manufacturers to investigate potential antitrust violations. Next week, the Senate will hold a hearing to review a dozen generic drugs with substantial price increases.
